FPS Early Careers Group (ECG) Site Visit to AMCS

The Federation of Piling Specialists (FPS) Early Careers Group (ECG) had an extremely informative and educational visit to Arcelor Mittals Construction Solutions’ (AMCS) fabrication yard in Kent.

The site visit, which took place on 9th March 2022 gave ECG members an insight into the workings of AMCS’ operations, in particular, how its Kent yard focuses on supplying cut and bend steel, as well as the fabrication of reinforcement cages for foundation piles and diaphragm walls.

AMCS gave ECG members a tour of its various facilities, which includes its welding school, testing labs, cut and bend shop, fabrication shop, and its storage yard, which stores all shapes and sizes of cages built using both steel and carbon fibre!

Mark Kawesa, Graduate Site Engineers, Bachy Solentache commenting on the day’s activities said: “The visit was greatly beneficial to our learning. We were extremely impressed with how well AMCS understood our operational requirements and emphasised that as an Engineer/Project manager/designer/buyer we must also reciprocate that fact and understand how steel fabricators operate.

“AMCS set a benchmark on how things should be done properly, and we were all impressed by a lot of things from its attention to detail with regards to quality, the teamwork displayed by its operations team, the automation of its operations, and the breadth of knowledge shown by staff.

“As a young engineer, the day was extremely useful to my professional development. I learnt many things that I would not have been able to in a ‘classroom’, so I will remember this visit for all future projects and professional endeavours.“

The FPS ECG would like to say a big thank you to Finabrr Lynch, George Dewar, and David Field from AMCS for taking time out of their day to facilitate an enjoyable learning day.

It is great to know that companies within the industry are willing to volunteer their time to share knowledge and provide invaluable learning experiences and the ECG is benefitting enormously.
