The Federation of Piling Specialists (FPS) Commercial Committee convened virtually on 17th September 2025. The meeting brought together a broad mix of member companies to discuss contractual, digital, regulatory, and engagement topics.
Key Updates and Actions:
– Digital Project Database – Interactive Map Development – Progress was reported on the FPS plan for an online interactive map showing member projects across the UK. The tool will allow clients to identify FPS contractors and explore potential pile reuse opportunities. Initial concerns around commercial sensitivity have been addressed. FPS members will be asked to submit project data quarterly, with a strong dataset needed for launch. Early versions could be available within 6–10 weeks, with long-term plans to integrate Geological Survey and other datasets.
– EFFC Contract Working Group – Progress was shared on a high-level principles document, designed as practical best-practice guidance on fair contracts. The draft aims to condense to two pages, aligning with Build UK guidance and the Construction Playbook. The FPS sees it as a door-opener for advocacy, CPD with professional bodies, speaking slots, and influencing clients and government frameworks.
– Build UK and Common Assessment Standard (CAS) – CAS continues to gain traction. FPS aims for its audit to be recognised as the benchmark of competence for piling contractors, ideally becoming a tender prerequisite. Opportunities were identified to engage with government projects such as nuclear and hospital builds through targeted delegations and thought leadership.
– Super Sector Skills Project – Work has begun on mapping competence routes for site operatives. FPS is seeking more flexible training delivery (e.g. for ex-military recruits) beyond the apprenticeship route, aiming to plug funding gaps and maximise levy value for members.
– Collateral Warranty Working Group – Progress was confirmed but delays acknowledged. Final approval is targeted for November.
– Pile Reuse Guidance – A one-page member guidance note has been drafted, with input sought from the Sustainability Committee. Risks linked to the Building Safety Act (e.g. new piling alongside reused foundations) will be highlighted. The guidance will remain member-only initially.
– Working Platform Certificate Update – Revisions to the certificate are underway following member feedback. Broader discussions on competence in platform design raised concerns over liability and responsibility. The matter may be escalated to the FPS Executive Committee and Technical Committee for decision, with member calls for more in-depth training noted.
