The Federation of Piling Specialists (FPS) is proud to announce its leadership role in a new Government-backed initiative to define and improve competence across the construction sector. As part of the Construction Leadership Council’s (CLC) Super Sector Skills Project, FPS will spearhead a task force focused on mapping the routes to competence for the installation of piles.
This initiative responds directly to the requirements of the new Building Safety Act, which mandates that every individual involved in construction must be competent in their role and that their employers must also demonstrate organisational competence.
The FPS task force will develop a comprehensive framework outlining how piling contractors define and achieve competence across a range of site roles. This includes identifying the training, knowledge, skills, experience, and behaviours required, as well as highlighting any issues with the current systems – such as CPCS/CSCS card schemes, apprenticeship delivery, funding gaps, and training provision.
The project, supported by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), is expected to span approximately six months, involving regular meetings every 2–3 weeks. This work has the potential to bring unfunded training under the CITB umbrella and resolve long-standing industry challenges.
We are calling on member companies to nominate volunteers to participate. Ideal candidates should:
- Have a strong understanding of operational site roles and the skills required
- Be familiar with current training approaches
- Be able to identify existing gaps or challenges in the system
This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of competence in piling and make a lasting impact on the wider construction industry.
