The Federation of Piling Specialists (FPS) Launches UK-wide Geotechnical Data Map to Support Design Optimisation and Sustainability

The Federation of Piling Specialists (FPS) has launched a new interactive UK-wide digital map of completed piling projects, designed to support smarter design decisions and promote more sustainable construction practices.

The FPS Geotechnical Data Map brings together historical piling project data into a single visual platform, enabling users to explore previous works across different regions and ground conditions. Developed using ArcGIS, the tool allows clients, designers and contractors to identify relevant project experience and better understand ground-related challenges at an early stage.

By improving access to historical data, the platform supports more informed foundation design, helping to optimise solutions and reduce unnecessary over-specification. Importantly, it also introduces the potential to identify opportunities for pile and foundation reuse, contributing to reduced embodied carbon and more sustainable project outcomes.

The map has been developed using datasets submitted by FPS members and represents an important step towards greater collaboration and transparency across the piling and geotechnical sector. The FPS will continue to expand and enrich the dataset over time, with future ambitions to integrate additional data sources and further enhance its value to the industry.
