FPS Chair to Speak at CIRIA Webinar – 29 July 2020

The Federation of Piling Specialists (FPS) Chair Steve Hadley, will be speaking on behalf of the FPS at the Construction Industry Research and Information Association (CIRIA) webinar titled ‘Will major infrastructure projects drive growth in piling?’

The webinar, which is scheduled for Wednesday 29 July 2020, 11:00 – 12:30, is designed to be a fore runner to CIRIA’s new piling guide, and brings together speakers from Network Rail, GCG and BAM Ritchies, as well as the FPS, on managing piling projects and how major projects provide an engine for growth for the piling industry.

The webinar will also look at new ways of working due to COVID-19, which will be important certainly in the short to medium term.

With huge advancement in design standards, legislation, codes of practice, techniques, materials and equipment used, since the last guides were published (1970s – 1980s) the new guidance will enable better project outcomes for managing geotechnical risk and enable the training of site personnel, designers, construction managers and ground engineering specialists.

CIRIA‘s new project will update the existing piling guidance and will provide:
• A review of bearing pile types. This will be complementary to ICE Specification for Piling and Embedded Retaining Walls.
• A review of problems associated with the construction of cast-in-place concrete piles.
• Outcomes of a survey to examine problems associated with the installation of displacement piles. This will include bored displacement piles and screw piles.

As such it is important to understand the influence of future major projects on providing an engine for growth for the piling industry and how new guidance can support this aim.

Attendees to the webinar will benefit from understanding the challenges associated with pile design and construction on major projects and hear a range of industry perspectives from a client, contractor, and consultant. The planned Q&A session will provide opportunities to contribute as well as dig deeper into issues. It also carries valuable CPD points.

The webinar is free to CIRIA members and only £35 + VAT to non-members. To book onto the webinar either sign in to your CIRIA account or create an account and joining instructions will be sent ten days before the webinar.
